Redmond Middle School Announces Winner of Student Design Contest

8th grader Anya Lukka wants to inspire community goodwill

Redmond, Wash. – Communities are built on inspiration and helping one another. Student Anya Lukka has a passion for art and is putting her design skills to work for local philanthropy. Her mask design featuring the Redmond Middle School Grizzly logo has been selected as the winner of their mask design contest.

“I am very proud to be part of the RMS community and I felt that our masks should display our pride of being the RMS grizzlies. I thought that creating this design for a mask would boost our school spirit even more and help the students connect even through these tough times,” according to Anya.

This is not her first big project. Anya envisions a career designing and creating products and recently she sold artwork and collected over $2,000 to donate to the Evergreen Health Foundation.

Rie Takagi-Stewart, the RMS PTSA lead, describes wanting to provide a creative outlet as her kids and their friends work through the challenges of remote school. She and the PTSA hatched a mask design contest idea that would be a fundraiser for needy families, and an opportunity to support a local business. The held a design contest and Anya’s winning design is being printed on decorative face masks to be sold with proceeds going toward a program for needy families.

“We are all in this together – and hopefully this project will help us remember to celebrate the good things we have in our community. We will come out of this pandemic together and stronger,” says Rie. “We hope to create a positive cycle, and when we approached JD and Minuteman Press of Redmond, he instantly supported our cause and agreed to partner with us within our limited budget”.

The Redmond Minuteman Press franchise owned by JD Klein, a Microsoft Alumni, has fought through the COVID economic headwinds by shifting its business toward graphic design, signs, direct mail and apparel including masks.

Klein adds, “We are thrilled to partner with Redmond Middle School to bring Anya’s winning face mask idea to life. Anya’s philanthropic activity should inspire us all.  Her grizzly design is clean and really pops on the black cotton two-ply decorative masks. Our team is excited to open up our in-house print and heat press systems for this project and many others to help families in need”.
